The Creation of Gielinor
The solitary act of creation that gave rise to the world adventurers now call home.
The Creation of Gielinor is the foundational mythos explaining how the world of Old School RuneScape came into existence. It describes a primordial era when Guthix discovered an empty plane and shaped it into the world of Gielinor. After creating the world, Guthix gave up his immortality, allowing the world to thrive. This act established the very fabric of reality and set the stage for all subsequent history within the game, explaining why magic exists and why certain gods are absent from the mortal plane today.

Lore & Background
Before the lands were known to men, elves, or dwarves, the plane was an empty void. Guthix discovered this silent expanse and, using his power, shaped it into the world now known as Gielinor. He created the land, seas, and skies alone, and after creation, gave up his immortality to allow the world to flourish. He then entered a deep sleep, but the Edicts of Guthix—a magical barrier preventing gods from entering or directly influencing Gielinor—were established much later, after the devastating God Wars. Zaros did not exist during this creation. He arrived much later, after Guthix had already created Gielinor and gone to sleep. The other major deities—Saradomin, Zamorak, Bandos, and Armadyl—had not yet arrived on this plane during this primordial act. This creation was not merely geological but spiritual. The very magic that flows through the world is a remnant of Guthix's power. The balance Guthix sought ensured that no single god could easily dominate again. It was only in later eras that Zaros arrived, and still later that Zamorak banished Zaros during the God Wars. After those devastating wars, Guthix awoke and established the Edicts of Guthix before returning to his slumber, leaving ruins and artifacts scattered across the land as testaments to those specific conflicts.
In Their Own Story
The silence was absolute before the first stone fell into place. Guthix hovered above the swirling chaos, his form fading with every ounce of power he gave away. Below him, the dark shadow of Zaros writhed against the newly forming chains of earth and water. As the last of the divine light poured down, the void solidified into grass, rock, and sea. The god fell silent, his work done, leaving behind a world that would breathe without him.
Reader's Guide
The origins of Gielinor stem from a cataclysmic struggle between powerful deities. Before the world existed, gods like Guthix and Zaros arrived in this plane seeking dominance. To prevent Zaros from consuming all existence, Guthix made the ultimate sacrifice. He poured his divine essence into creating the physical realm we now know as Gielinor. This act not only formed the land but also sealed Zaros within its depths, hidden away for millennia. Following this event, the Godless Era began. With Guthix's power spent and Zaros imprisoned, the remaining gods were forced to retreat or operate in secret. Their followers eventually rose to prominence across different regions, leading to the ancient conflicts known as the God Wars. These battles left scars upon the land that persist today, visible in ruins like the God Wars Dungeon. Over time, mortal races such as humans, elves, and dwarves emerged to populate this new world. The balance Guthix sought maintained peace for a long age, though the shadows of the old gods never truly vanished. Players exploring Gielinor walk upon ground shaped by divine blood and sacrifice.
Did You Know?
- Guthix gave up his immortality after creating Gielinor, not before; he used his power to forge the physical world and then surrendered his immortality to allow the world to thrive.
- Zaros arrived long after Guthix created Gielinor and was later banished by Zamorak during the God Wars, not trapped during creation.
- This event marked the beginning of the First Age, also known as the Age of Creation—the period after Guthix's creation and before the arrival of other gods.
- The Edicts of Guthix are not a deep sleep; they are a magical barrier established after the God Wars that prevents gods from entering or directly influencing Gielinor. Guthix's sleep is a separate state he entered after
- The God Wars Dungeon contains artifacts from the later conflict between Saradomin, Zamorak, Bandos, and Armadyl, not from the creation of Gielinor itself.
